Looking for work can bring uncertainty and financial pressure. In Quran 28:24, Musa asks Allah for good after helping two women water their flock. The following verses describe an invitation, a suggestion to hire him and a marriage proposal connected to a term of service. They do not specify how many days passed. This guide explains that supplication and other prayers for provision, alongside the need to keep seeking lawful work.
Quick answer: The best-known dua for rizq and work is the dua of Musa: “Rabbi inni lima anzalta ilayya min khayrin faqir”, “My Lord, I am in desperate need of whatever good You send down to me” (Quran 28:24).
What Does Rizq Mean in Islam?
Rizq means provision, and it’s much wider than salary. It includes your health, your family, your knowledge, your time, your peace of mind and, above all, your faith. Allah calls Himself Ar-Razzaq, the Provider (Quran 51:58), and promises: “There is no creature on earth except that its provision is upon Allah” (Quran 11:6).
Your rizq was written before you were born. Dua and effort don’t fight that decree. They are part of how Allah delivers it to you.
The Dua of Musa: Rabbi Inni Lima Anzalta
When Musa (peace be upon him) fled Egypt, he arrived in Madyan exhausted and with nothing. He saw two women struggling to water their flock, helped them, and then sat in the shade and made this dua:
رَبِّ إِنِّي لِمَا أَنزَلْتَ إِلَيَّ مِنْ خَيْرٍ فَقِيرٌ
Transliteration: Rabbi inni lima anzalta ilayya min khayrin faqir.
Meaning: My Lord, I am in desperate need of whatever good You send down to me.
Source: Quran 28:24
One of the women invited Musa to meet her father (28:25). A daughter then suggested hiring him (28:26). Her father proposed marriage to one of his daughters in return for eight years of service, with ten years as a voluntary extension (28:27). These verses do not give a timetable for a reader to obtain work after making dua.
Three details in this story stay with me:
- He did good first. He helped strangers before asking for anything.
- He didn’t name a specific job. He asked for “whatever good” Allah would send, leaving the choice to Allah.
- He admitted need. Faqir means poor and needy. There is no pride in the dua.
It’s the dua I’d recommend to anyone who is unemployed, underemployed or waiting to hear back after an interview.
Other Authentic Duas for Provision
“Suffice me with the halal”
A man came to Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) unable to pay a debt. Ali taught him a dua from the Prophet ﷺ, saying that even if he had a debt the size of a mountain, Allah would pay it for him:
اللَّهُمَّ اكْفِنِي بِحَلَالِكَ عَنْ حَرَامِكَ، وَأَغْنِنِي بِفَضْلِكَ عَمَّنْ سِوَاكَ
Transliteration: Allahummakfini bi-halalika ‘an haramik, wa aghnini bi-fadlika ‘amman siwak.
Meaning: O Allah, suffice me with what You have made lawful so I have no need of what You have forbidden, and make me independent by Your grace of all besides You.
Source: Jami’ at-Tirmidhi 3563 (graded hasan)
This is the dua for anyone tempted to cut corners at work, take interest-based loans or accept a job with haram income because nothing else has come.
Good provision, every morning
After Fajr, the Prophet ﷺ would say: “Allahumma inni as’aluka ‘ilman nafi’an, wa rizqan tayyiban, wa ‘amalan mutaqabbala”, “O Allah, I ask You for beneficial knowledge, good provision and accepted deeds” (Sunan Ibn Majah 925). Notice the word tayyib, meaning good and pure. The goal is barakah in what you earn, not just more of it.
Guidance, piety, chastity and sufficiency
اللَّهُمَّ إِنِّي أَسْأَلُكَ الْهُدَى وَالتُّقَى وَالْعَفَافَ وَالْغِنَى
Transliteration: Allahumma inni as’alukal-huda wat-tuqa wal-‘afafa wal-ghina.
Meaning: O Allah, I ask You for guidance, piety, chastity and self-sufficiency.
Source: Sahih Muslim 2721
Al-ghina here means sufficiency, not needing people. It is contentment as much as wealth.
Dua for Finding a Job and for a Job Interview
There is no hadith with a special “job interview dua”, but these fit the moment perfectly:
- Before applying: Rabbi inni lima anzalta ilayya min khayrin faqir (Quran 28:24).
- Before the interview: Rabbish-rahli sadri, wa yassir li amri, wahlul ‘uqdatan min lisani, yafqahu qawli, the dua of Musa for courage and clear speech (Quran 20:25–28). We explain it in detail in our dua for exams guide, because it suits any test.
- Choosing between offers: pray Salat al-Istikharah and consult people you trust.
- If you’re in debt and anxious: the Prophet ﷺ sought refuge from “the burden of debt and being overpowered by men” in his dua for worry and grief. See our guide to the dua for anxiety, worry and grief.
What Actually Increases Rizq? The Quran and Sunnah
Dua works alongside actions that Allah Himself tied to provision:
- Taqwa. “Whoever is mindful of Allah, He will make a way out for him and provide for him from where he does not expect” (Quran 65:2–3).
- Istighfar. “Ask forgiveness of your Lord… He will give you increase in wealth and children” (Quran 71:10–12). See our dua for forgiveness guide.
- Tawakkul with effort. “If you relied on Allah as He deserves, He would provide for you as He provides for the birds: they go out hungry in the morning and return full in the evening” (Jami’ at-Tirmidhi 2344). The birds still leave the nest.
- Keeping family ties. “Whoever would like his provision to be expanded… let him maintain the ties of kinship” (Sahih al-Bukhari 5986).
- Honest work with your own hands. “No one has ever eaten better food than what he earned with his own hands” (Sahih al-Bukhari 2072).
- Gratitude. “If you are grateful, I will surely increase you” (Quran 14:7).
- Charity. Wealth does not decrease from charity (Sahih Muslim 2588).
What About Surah Al-Waqi’ah for Rizq?
You’ll often see it claimed that reciting Surah Al-Waqi’ah every night protects from poverty. The narration behind this is weak according to many hadith scholars, including Imam Ahmad and, more recently, al-Albani. Reciting Surah Al-Waqi’ah is still good, since it is the Quran and every letter is rewarded. But it shouldn’t be treated as a guaranteed “rizq formula”, and it certainly shouldn’t replace the authentic duas above.

Final Thoughts
If you’re in a hard season financially, you’re in the same place Musa was when he sat under that tree. Do some good for someone today, sit somewhere quiet, and say his dua with all the need you actually feel. Then send the next application, make the next call and keep your earnings halal. Leave the timing to the One who provides for the birds.
