When the call or message comes that someone has died, most of us freeze. We want to say something that helps them and helps us, but the words don’t come. The Sunnah gives us words for every stage of that loss: the moment you hear the news, the moment the eyes are closed, the burial, the visits to the grave in the years that follow, and the quiet duas that keep reaching them long after. I’ve arranged this guide in that order, so you can find the right dua at the moment you need it. Each one has Arabic, transliteration, meaning and its source.
Quick answer: When you hear of a death, say “Inna lillahi wa inna ilayhi raji’un”. For the deceased, the simplest complete dua is “Allahummaghfir lahu warhamhu”, “O Allah, forgive him and have mercy on him” (use laha / warhamha for a woman).
When You Hear That Someone Has Died
Allah praises those who, when struck by calamity, say “Inna lillahi wa inna ilayhi raji’un” (Quran 2:156). The Prophet ﷺ taught Umm Salamah to add a short dua. When her husband Abu Salamah died, she said it, and Allah replaced her loss with the Prophet ﷺ himself as her husband:
إِنَّا لِلَّهِ وَإِنَّا إِلَيْهِ رَاجِعُونَ، اللَّهُمَّ أْجُرْنِي فِي مُصِيبَتِي، وَأَخْلِفْ لِي خَيْرًا مِنْهَا
Transliteration: Inna lillahi wa inna ilayhi raji’un. Allahumma’jurni fi musibati, wa akhlif li khayran minha.
Meaning: We belong to Allah and to Him we will return. O Allah, reward me in my calamity and replace it for me with something better.
Source: Sahih Muslim 918
The Prophet ﷺ also said that when you are present with a dying or deceased person, you should say only good, “for the angels say ‘Ameen’ to whatever you say” (Sahih Muslim 919).
Dua When Closing the Eyes of the Deceased
When Abu Salamah died, the Prophet ﷺ closed his eyes and made this dua for him. Replace “Abu Salamah” with the name of the person you are praying for:
Transliteration: Allahummaghfir li-[name], warfa’ darajatahu fil-mahdiyyin, wakhlufhu fi ‘aqibihi fil-ghabirin, waghfir lana wa lahu ya Rabbal-‘alamin, wafsah lahu fi qabrihi, wa nawwir lahu fih.
Meaning: O Allah, forgive [name], raise his rank among the rightly guided, be a successor to him for those he leaves behind, forgive us and him, O Lord of the worlds, make his grave spacious for him and fill it with light.
Source: Sahih Muslim 920
I think this is one of the most complete duas for a deceased person, because it covers their forgiveness, their rank, their grave, and the family they leave behind.
The Dua for the Deceased (for a Man, a Woman or Parents)
The core dua is short enough for anyone to say at any time:
اللَّهُمَّ اغْفِرْ لَهُ وَارْحَمْهُ، وَعَافِهِ وَاعْفُ عَنْهُ
Transliteration: Allahummaghfir lahu warhamhu, wa ‘afihi wa’fu ‘anh.
Meaning: O Allah, forgive him, have mercy on him, keep him safe and pardon him.
Source: The opening of the longer dua in Sahih Muslim 963
Adjusting the wording:
- For a woman: Allahummaghfir laha warhamha, wa ‘afiha wa’fu ‘anha.
- For both parents: Allahummaghfir lahuma warhamhuma. You can also use the Quranic Rabbirhamhuma kama rabbayani saghira, explained in our dua for parents guide.
- For several people: Allahummaghfir lahum warhamhum.
The full version of this dua, recited after the third takbir of the funeral prayer, is explained step by step in our guide on how to pray janazah.
A Quranic Dua for All Who Have Died
This verse asks forgiveness for every believer who died before us. It is a beautiful dua to say for grandparents, ancestors and the ummah as a whole:
Meaning: Our Lord, forgive us and our brothers who preceded us in faith, and put no resentment in our hearts towards those who believe. Our Lord, You are Kind and Merciful.

At the Burial
When the body is placed in the grave, the Sunnah is to say “Bismillahi wa ‘ala sunnati Rasulillah”, “In the name of Allah and according to the Sunnah of the Messenger of Allah” (Sunan Abi Dawud 3213).
After burial, the Prophet ﷺ would stand by the grave and say: “Seek forgiveness for your brother and ask Allah to keep him firm, for he is now being questioned” (Sunan Abi Dawud 3221). So before you leave the graveyard, say:
اللَّهُمَّ اغْفِرْ لَهُ، اللَّهُمَّ ثَبِّتْهُ
Transliteration: Allahummaghfir lah. Allahumma thabbit-h.
Meaning: O Allah, forgive him. O Allah, make him firm.
Source: Based on Sunan Abi Dawud 3221
Those few minutes at the graveside, when the deceased is being questioned, are among the most valuable moments to pray for them.
Dua When Visiting Graves
Visiting graves is a sunnah that softens the heart and reminds us of the Hereafter. When you enter a Muslim graveyard, say:
السَّلَامُ عَلَيْكُمْ أَهْلَ الدِّيَارِ مِنَ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ وَالْمُسْلِمِينَ، وَإِنَّا إِنْ شَاءَ اللَّهُ بِكُمْ لَلَاحِقُونَ، أَسْأَلُ اللَّهَ لَنَا وَلَكُمُ الْعَافِيَةَ
Transliteration: As-salamu ‘alaykum ahlad-diyari minal-mu’minina wal-muslimin, wa inna in sha’ Allahu bikum lalahiqun. As’alullaha lana wa lakumul-‘afiyah.
Meaning: Peace be upon you, O believing and Muslim inhabitants of these dwellings. We will, if Allah wills, join you. I ask Allah for well-being for us and for you.
Source: Sahih Muslim 975
Then make personal dua for your loved one by name. There is no need for special rituals. Sincere dua in your own words is enough.
What Continues to Benefit the Deceased
The Prophet ﷺ said: “When a person dies, his deeds come to an end except for three: ongoing charity (sadaqah jariyah), knowledge that is benefited from, or a righteous child who prays for him” (Sahih Muslim 1631).
Practical ways to keep that reward flowing:
- Keep making dua for them, especially in sujud and the last third of the night.
- Give charity on their behalf. Sa’d ibn ‘Ubadah gave a garden in charity for his late mother with the Prophet’s approval (Sahih al-Bukhari 2756). A water well, a mosque contribution or sponsoring a student’s education are common choices.
- Pay off their debts as a priority.
- Perform Hajj or Umrah for them if they could not, once you have done your own (Sahih al-Bukhari 1852).
- Keep their good relationships: honour their friends and keep ties with their relatives.
Comforting the Family
When the Prophet ﷺ sent condolences to his daughter on the death of her child, his message was:
إِنَّ لِلَّهِ مَا أَخَذَ، وَلَهُ مَا أَعْطَى، وَكُلٌّ عِنْدَهُ بِأَجَلٍ مُسَمًّى، فَلْتَصْبِرْ وَلْتَحْتَسِبْ
Transliteration: Inna lillahi ma akhadh, wa lahu ma a’ta, wa kullun ‘indahu bi-ajalin musamma, faltasbir waltahtasib.
Meaning: To Allah belongs what He took and what He gave, and everything with Him has an appointed time, so be patient and hope for reward.
Source: Sahih al-Bukhari 1284
Practical kindness matters too. When Ja’far died, the Prophet ﷺ said: “Prepare food for the family of Ja’far, for something has come to them that has occupied them” (Sunan Abi Dawud 3132). A cooked meal often says more than words.
It is also normal to cry. When his son Ibrahim died, the Prophet ﷺ wept and said: “The eyes shed tears and the heart grieves, but we say only what pleases our Lord” (Sahih al-Bukhari 1303).
